My cousin reads a lot of Dickens, and her politics still suck. But overall, I agree with this quote, oh yes.

I'd gladly shoot Dickens, if I could manage it, and I've read a lot of Dickens.

I suspect, however, that was not what St. Brodsky of the Vague Pronoun Reference meant.
