The thing is, we have the technology, or will, to get off this rock, possibly out of the solar system. We could outlive the end of the sun.

Getting out of the galaxy in time, that's another matter. It could be the end of us.

Considering the empty space within each galaxy, I wouldn't expect the collision to be catastrophic (except near the center). Bits and pieces may break away from the rest, but that doesn't preclude life.
