"Yes but here's a more tactically-useful way of saying that"
and
that I'm not overlooking a third of a word's meaning or implications conventionally abbreviated or left not explicitly mentioned because they're considered obvious by folks who are ahead of me in the subject.
these two things are related.
people who are "ahead" in a subject have to keep in mind that "useful" is defined by utility - that is it's not "useful" to talk "over the heads" (i.e. not keeping track of "implications conventionally abbreviated") of people who are "behind".
but people who are "ahead" have a view of "useful" based in experience - a view that people who are "behind" don't see. "useful" is defined by effect/result with an eye on the difference between immediate resistance/rejection different and longterm resistance/rejection.
the danger here being analysis paralysis.
the discussion on one has also been uncomfortably challenging -- some concepts I though I 'got', it looks like I don't understand as thoroughly as I'd thought. [...] So I've got a chunk o' reading and thinking (and probably more challenging conversations) ahead of me there.
the trick here is getting people (others and oneself) to and through and past the discomfort and work on the problem causing the discomfort - and then equip them to deal with the discomfort when it happens again and again and again. the discomfort is grounded in the idea that "doing wrong/bad makes me a bad person" - either internally or externally stated/heard. and there is much each person does wrong.
while i know/write/comment a lot about various privileges, i still respond poorly when my own privilege is pointed out. it's not easy pointing out privilege or having one's own privilege pointed out.
you don't see what you don't see
