I wondered how CountryMouse knew this; her post gave me a couple

(which I should have remembered on my own -- doh!).
So the latest (smushing a few tweets together) seems to be:

*sigh* Reminds me I need to get around to writing up that combination "ethical issues and the evolution of LJ" and "no site is safe (because even if the owner doesn't sell out, sie might get hit by a bus[*])" entry that's been percolating in the back of my head for about nine months.
With luck we'll see an announcement that everything's coming back online soon [knock wood]. I look forward to reading the whole story.

But this does make me glad I chose to mirror my journal instead of putting all my eggs in one basket. (I still need to migrate my older entries that are ony on LJ to the other sites.)
Note that something like this could happen to LJ as well; it's simpy a lot less likely because of the amount of money involved (a substation fire coupled with a glitch in the backup power for LJ's hosting service could plausible knock LJ offline for a day or so, right?). The tradeoff for that is dealing with a corporation many of us don't trust, or disapprove of. TANSTAAFL.
When I realized I might be pushed to leave LJ in protest at some point, my incentive for mirroring my journal to multiple places was that I didn't know where everybody else was moving to. But just after I'd made that decision, I realized that it was also a hedge against one of the smaller sites getting big enough to be bought out by a company that behaved like 6A and SUP ... and, if enough of my friends did something similar (or at least remembered what other sites I'm 'dglenn' on), also a backup against outages like this one. The odds of multiple sites run by different people and hosted by different services in different geographical areas, all having outages at once, seems small. (Though that's what today is going to feel like for me, since the roofers will have to move the antenna out of the way and I won't have a net connection until they're finished.)
Still, TANSTAAFL: the price I pay for mirroring my journal (other than having to make correct each typo nine times) is fragmentation of the comments -- most are attached to the LJ copies of my entries, but I get comments at IJ and DJ as well, and they're three separate conversations instead of one big one.
