My goodness, that man has a busy social life...

EDIT: ah, I seem to have been labouring under a very nearly humorous misunderstanding there. I do apologise.

:)

She's not. I don't think any partner I've ever had has played Tom Waits for me, while, before, or after we were involved. (OK, I can't logically be sure that someone who once played me a Tom Waits song won't someday move from "casual friend" through good friend to lover and thence to ex, but it seems less than likely right now.)

Huh, I was turned on to Tom Waits by someone who is now an ex. Of course, she wasn't an ex then and she was pretty nice a large amount of the time.
I'm still pretty fond of her, actually...

I wasn't either. I randomly stumbled across one of his videos on MuchMusic and loved it and wanted to hear more. Then two gay guys and an ex who wasn't evil, just misguided, provided me with more.

One of the cool things about listening to Tom Waits is that I don't associate his music with any particular relationship. That's the case with some (but not most) of the music I like, which can make it hard to listen to at times.

No, I got introduced to Tom Waits through Saturday Night Live. I thought he was another comedy skit, then someone told me later that this was how he really sang.

Yeah, I can see having that reaction to hearing him first on SNL.

Who's Tom Waits? No, I mean, seriously. A recording artist, apparently, but...

I don't think I have any exes who've successfully introduced me to any artists. I'm notoriously resistant to taking other people's advice about music, and pretty good at finding stuff I like on my own.

A songwriter/performer who manages to be enjoyable despite having a voice that makes Bob Dylan sound like Julie Andrews. An acquired taste, perhaps; his singing sounds like the way a smoky single-malt smells between the first sip and the second. I was introduced to his works by the same college pals who introduced me to Zippy, ElfQuest, Manneheim Steamroller, and The Clash (though I don't think I learnt of all of those from the same person, just in the same gang).

Despite the "with a voice like that he decided to become a singer?!" effect, lots of folks (including myself) enjoy his work -- he mostly manages to turn his voice into an asset as a character in the songs.

If I haven't scared you out of giving him a listen, I suggest "Step Right Up" and "The Piano Has Been Drinking" to start with.

Since I had no idea who Tom Waits might be until reading an explanation (and I'm sure I'll forget promptly), whatever sins my exes might be accused of, this one isn't on the list.
