"Fatphobia especially is so perplexing to me, because it's like ... what did fat people ever do to you? Disgust you? Fail to perform sufficient gestures of shame and self-loathing? Disrupt your sense of aesthetic hierarchy? Remind you that actually, fat women are allowed to go out in public and have friends and say thoughtful things and live vibrant lives? THE HORROR! THE HORROR!" -- [info] tacky_tramp, 2008-05-29

I don't believe she had a concept of making the con better. I believe that, for some people, the compulsion to tease and harass is extremely strong.

I've seem people faced with the idea that they shouldn't insult anyone, and it's as though you offered to cut off their air. They get really upset, and they start begging. Not even a little? Not even people who really deserve it?

Someone like that has a negative sum approach to emotions. They need to make others feel a lot worse in order to feel a little better themselves.

So, this fits with the idea that what really offended her was that Wiscon was a place where Officially Designated Insult Objects were in a friendly, shame-free environment. She *wants* an ODIOus-rich world.

And it's not the more common mostly-guys conventions, since male gamers and fans are also simple-minded comedy bait.

I think it's usually a fear of being so themselves.

For some, that may be true, like some guys' homophobia is exacerbated by secret fears that they may be gay themselves. I don't know about "usually", though -- is that just a vague impression, or an attitude you've seen/inferred often, or have you read studies? (curious)

I was on medicine that got me from 135 pounds at the age of 16 to 280 pounds by the age of 21. I have since lost the weight, and with each pound more and more people told me how horrible I looked and how it was hard to look at me...my dad even told me that I looked like a freak, and my grandmother said I was obscene.

I have looked at pics, and I think I looked just fine.

Now I know what everyone will think if I get up there again. People honestly have no idea what their words mean.

My biggest (please note that I said "biggest" & not "only)
problem w/all the supposed "anti-fat" crap is that it's
almost ALWAYS direct AT WOMEN - like men NEVER get fat, or,
if they do, it's not so bad.
