Right now[*], the air above my street smells like seawater. (Or, y'know, the Chesapeake Bay.) But the wind is coming from the west -- fairly strongly -- and the harbour is east of here. WTF?

[*] Well, except for a few seconds just after a cement mixer goes through the intersection, when it smells like paraffin. Looks like my guess about the paraffin smell being a variation on diesel exhaust was right.

Easy. The wind that's coming from the West isn't travelling in a straight line. You have either the leeward side of on eddy over the harbour or the downside of a a convection current that started at the harbour.
