I don't think that's childish. One of the great things about children is that they want to understand things, and it really doesn't ruin to for them to know how something works. My DS loves to read books explaining how things work (especially engines). Think of your average child's awe at a truck engine.

Yeah, that was the only thing I disagreed with about this statement; so many children are better than this. Would that more adults were.

Maybe "something really *stupid*"?

But stupid, yes. I have very little patience with people who think that when we understand how the universe works we'll have lost the capacity for wonder, or some such. I have more time for people who think that we'll *never* understand it because our brains are only designed to cope with bananas and leopards, or something (because it's by no means certain yet that they're not right) but it's only a short step from that first one to glorying in our incapacity, and I can't be doing with that.

I tell you, once we've fathomed this creation out it'll be time to start working on our own, and then the awefulness of what we've grown up in will really hit home.

I've felt this way for many years. If anything, having a grasp of the mechanics only deepens one's sense of wonder. It's the difference between looking at a photograph of Everest, and standing at its foot.
