"The annoyance we put up with at the airport is not a by-product of terrorism; it is the goal. It has become increasingly obvious that the real aim of terrorists is not to blow up plans but to inconvenience travelers and cripple an already overburdened airline industry. When one thinks of the staggering loss of time, money, and materials that are a result of increased security measures only one conclusion can be drawn: the terrorists have already won." -- Billy Biondi, 2007-12-29 (comment)

An alternate theory I have heard is that the lines, arbitrary rules, random detentions, unlawful search and seizure, etc., are getting people used to the idea that they MUST give up rights whenever authority demands, or have their privileges cut.

%I hear chocolate rations are getting cut next week for people whose cell phones don't have built-in GPS. It's to counterbalance the cost of finding them if they get lost, of course.%

If not the terrorists, then the paranoid bureaucrats. Or their non-paranoid, but power-hungry superiors.

It works. I will not fly. If I want to visit my Mom in AZ, I will drive cross country to do so. Camp in the van with my dog. Damn the price of gas. I'm not going through what airline patrons do. And I'm not anything but a patriot. My country has betrayed me. I mistrust its' notion of 'protection'. I never thought I'd be scared to be an American in my own land. But I am still enamored of my country.
