Well, they are also an Ankara and possibly all of Turkey thing, although they are becoming a dying breed there too.
The ones that linger on sell mostly staples that are too impractical to buy in small lots and too heavy to carry from the market by a non-car-driving housemaker otherwise: Potatoes and onions, sometimes rice.
