The pessimist and the optimist adjust the sails too, if they happen to be sailing, because they're neither of them idiots. No, that one doesn't work for me.
 
It's not perfect, but it still makes more sense to me than the half-glass one, because it relies less on the speaker and listener having the same interpretations and emotional connotations for 'half full' and 'half empty'.

That said, I'm taking it as a description by way of charicatures, not as a literal prediction of behaviour.

Personally, my vote is with the audio engineer: "The glass has 6dB of headroom." (Or is it just 3dB? I forget.)

Well, an analogy that expects the extremes to be inert lumps...

I'd call them "catatonic" and "polyanna".
