I have to admit, the first story was much more dramatic. I'm astonished that he put the SLR down! What does he do..go shopping in peoples' homes and asking the owners for appraisals for the stuff he intends to steal?
I wonder what he'd've done if you'd made crazed Rasputin eyes and started stripping while brandishing Letter Opener? It's not funny, but it's possibly weirder than he bargained for. How are your bruises? Can I help in any way?
I think I'm more enraged over this than I would be if he'd been hostile and violent. A thief is still a thief, and him trying to be polite to you doesn't change the fact that he came to steal something from you, and could have caused great physical harm. At least a hostile thief would have been honest about what he was there for, and not trying to convince you (futilely) that he wasn't a bad guy.
I hope the drives are undamaged, you find the cross, and the cops find and arrest him, pronto.

Can the police do a DNA check on the blood?
That was just Strange & Scary
