Don't know how it would work as a "flash," but Johnny Chung Lee says that you can get IR LED arrays for night vision security cameras from various online stores. He used them in a project to make the Wii remote to do finger-tracking by wrapping fingers with reflective tape. And check out his stuff if you haven't; he does some amazing things with readily-available electronics, from automatic projector keystone to an electronic whiteboard using the Wii remote that works on any surface, and more.

I will be posting about this on my lj later this week, but I thought you'd like to see people are trying to do stuff to fix the healthcare issues (now if they could just fix us, that would be great). ;-)
