I can see the classical elements (whether by influence or parallel evolution) in late 1990s metal, but personally I think it's more closely related to early music than to classical. But the blues ... not only do I see the resemblance, but the lineage is known, isn't it? (Blues -> classic rock, especially British invasion -> early metal -> modern metal, right?)

I think the blues influence is pretty obvious, but only in certain metal. Black Sabbath was a blues band before they were called Black Sabbath. Just listen to the harmonica in "Wizard", or the saxophone in "Breakout".

As for the classical, Yngwie Malmsteen has been the master at infusing classical sounds into metal. Then again, a whole set of Scandinavian and Dutch bands have been doing classical influenced metal recently. See Symphonic Metal. The first band in that genre I'd recommend is Nightwish.

Fair enough--it's probably that I'm not well-versed in metal. :)
