Actually, steampunk is what happens when goths discover that they're too damn old to be living in squalor anymore, and decide they can too have nice things. It is entirely possible to do steampunk without using brown, unless you're counting wood (which can be laquered black authentically, actually). There's nothing saying that goths can't enjoy Arts and Crafts paint, crown mouldings, and Persian rugs... :)
