Datapoint: as a cisgendered feminist, I think I'm more likely to actually state my gender accurately if "rather not say" is a different checkbox than "other": they're recognizing that there are a variety of reasons for not wanting to identify oneself by gender on a form, and "none of your business" is a different answer from "other" (though both might be true, of course).

What I would like to see on these forms, I think, is at least "female," "male," "other" [with a space to specify further if the person wants], and "rather not say." A fill-in-the-blank without checkboxes would be better, but I suspect someone would then get to massage the data for things like capitalization, the commoner typos, and possibly if they decide (for example) that "female," "woman," "F," "feminine," and "girl" are instances of the same thing.

Would putting a / between "rather not say" and "other" make putting it on the same line better (showing they're different options, but not expanding the list too much)? Would "unspecified" be preferable to "rather not say"?

I routinely pick "rather not say" when asked, nut just because it's none of their business, but mostly because the last thing I want is for someone to try to cater to what they think women want, because it's bound to tick me off!

But yes, I always have a thought, "& what do you do when you're neither or both...?"
