(Note that, personally, I don't think this covers the whole of psychiatry, but I did think it was a useful description of a set of cultural biases that affect how many people -- not just mental health professionals -- perceive normalcy and "okayness".)

You also need to bear in mind (as I do) that in order to be a psychiatrist you have to have an M.D. already, which means that you have already been culturally conditioned to a particular set of parameters about what is appropriate functioning and what isn't.
