"Well, this is the first species on our planet whose parent is a computer. I think that is a pretty dramatic philosophical statement. It's the first species on the planet to have a website encoded into its genetic code, showing its parentage of the computer. So just as a concept, thinking about future design as technologies improve, if we could design plants from scratch, to grow with little or no water, not needing extensive fertilizer because we could build in nitrogen fixation, et cetera, these are great concepts. Thinking about the future. The future of humanity, how are we going to feed ourselves as we constantly grow in the population. When we are currently destroying the environment we live in now. We need something radically different. We need something where the limitation is our imagination. I think this technique provides that." -- biologist Craig Venter (b. 1946-10-14), on the PBS television program Charlie Rose 2010-05-21 ( video, transcript), discussing his team's recent success in synthetic biology

And let's just hope that their successes don't end up contributing to the problem - like GMO's do. Sadly scientists - especially scientists being paid by large corporations- aren't any better at figuring out when they don't really know the impact what they don't know will have.
Even Mary Shelley couldn't have imagined the level of awful some of this is causing and has yet to cause.
