From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2010-11-02 (today):

"I am not a Democrat, because I have no idea what their economic policies are; And I am not a Republican, because I know precisely what their economic policies are." -- Barry Ritholtz, financial commentator.

(submitted to the mailing list by Mike Krawchuk)

"If spending on war can provide jobs and lift the economy then so can spending on roads, weatherizing homes, or educating our kids. Yes, that's right, all the forms of stimulus spending that Broder derided so much because they add to the deficit will increase GDP and generate jobs just like the war that Broder is advocating (which will also add to the deficit).

"So, we have two routes to prosperity. We can either build up our physical infrastructure and improve the skills and education of our workers or we can go kill Iranians. Broder has made it clear where he stands."

-- Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, 2010-10-31

"It really never seems to occur to the pundits [except for Dean Baker?] and the political leaders that using the power of government spending for the peoples' benefit will help everyone." -- [info] - personal filkertom, 2010-11-01 (also at LJ)

"Besides the moral emptiness of engaging in war to spur the economy, war has another failing compared to other government spending: much of the money is spent elsewhere than in the USA. Much better to take that war money and extend unemployment benefits, which are almost all spent in the USA, and quickly. Or health care, etc.; there are many ways to spend money in the USA, ways that don't involve killing people and making large parts of the world mad at us." -- anthrosciguy, 2010-10-31 (comment under Baker's post above; scroll down for it (12:47 PM))

The ruling class loves war as a form of economic stimulus. Think of it this way -- if you start a war, then you direct the means of production into producing massive quantities of goods that are ultimately destroyed, which means that the production transfers wealth from the government to the ruling class without benefiting the middle and working classes overmuch. On the other hand, if you have an economic stimulus that consists of improving infrastructure and putting the wage-earning classes to work, then you have conserved all that wealth that otherwise would have been destroyed, and this ultimately benefits the ruling class less, because it fails to widen the income gap between them.

Broder is always solidly on the side of the ruling class.
