From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2008-04-26:

Hawking compared people who don't want to spend money on human space exploration to those who opposed the journey of Christopher Columbus in 1492.

"The discovery of the New World made a profound difference to the old. Just think we wouldn't have had a Big Mac or KFC."

-- Stephen Hawking, astrophysicist, from a report of his lecture at George Washington University on April 21, 2008.

If I were Professor Hawking's PR person or assistant, I would be demanding that they back up the quote. I can see Hawking saying something about the Columbian exchange, and the impossibility of so much contemporary cuisine without those explorations and cross-importations. But it's not the Big Mac, except as a not-very-clear example of adding tomatoes to a bunch of Old World foods like beef and wheat. It's pizza and chocolate milk and chili; it's that very British dish, chicken tikka masala.
