"In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it 'Christmas' and went to church; the Jews called it 'Hanukkah' and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say 'Merry Christmas!' or 'Happy Hanukkah!' or (to the atheists) 'Look out for the wall!'" -- Dave Barry

[To my Jewish friends lighting the first candle this evening, happy Hanukkah!]

Of course, Jews don't go to synagogue for Chanukah,fr it's a minor holiday.

Well yeah, as well as the detail that the calendars frequently don't line up with Chanukah overlapping or butting up next to Christmas the way this quote implies. This year, for example, I expect to hear some folks appending "... or Chanukah" to their "Merry Christmas" without noticing that Chanukah will have been finished for a couple of weeks by then. Fortunately I don't expect accuracy from Barry.

(OTOH, being eight days long, there'll be at least one Sabbath each Chanukah, so folks will be at synagogue during Chanukah, even if not especially for Chanukah, Right? So Barry's, uh, kindasorta right...ish.)
