(I've seen so very many people mistakenly write "Guilded Age" lately, that when someone correctly uses "Gilded Age" as Ms. Marcotte did, that has started to look funny to me. I hate it when a mistake becomes common enough to have that effect. *Grrr*)
I guess that looking at it from above, it looked gilded, even though folks on the bottom looking up could tell it was brazen, but the folks on top got to spin the PR?
I always thought the term "gilded age" was a (pejorative) allusion to the much older expression "golden age". I always thought the implication of "gilded" was "fake", as in "looked like a golden age, but proved not to be if you so much as scratched the surface".
