"If all the rich and all of the church people should send their children to the public schools they would feel bound to concentrate their money on improving these schools until they met the highest ideals." -- Susan B. Anthony (b. 1820-02-15, d. 1906-03-13)

Um. The rich and church-going most assuredly have concentrated their money on improving public schools until they met the highest ideals. Their ideals.

The socioeconomically privileged have given us forms of tracking and testing which arrogate their privileges to their children at the expense of others'.

The church-going waged a battle royale to bring not only Christianity but their specific denomination into public schools to convert/"Americanize" the little "foreigners" (Irish, Italians, and other Mediterranean non-Protestants). The RCC didn't decide to dot the early 20th century northeast US coast with parochial schools for the hell of it or because they had a problem with secular education. No, there was an absolutely open, explicit, racist wide-spread attempt to eradicate "papism" by introducing a mandatory Protestant education to public schools. Catholic parents sued for violation of their civil rights in NY -- and lost. And that is when and why all those parochial schools were founded. Because at the time public schools had become a tool of State-sponsored religious indoctrination and cultural warfare.

Suzie B is a great hero of women's liberation. But if you want a poster child for white, middle-class feminists' unchecked privileged, there you go.
