"In their passion, Republicans convinced themselves that the constitutional republic and the free-enterprise system were threatened as never before. Their response? To threaten to blow up the free-enterprise system and wreck the republic unless they gained their point.

"Republicans have become so gripped by pessimism and panic that they feel they have nothing to lose by rushing into a catastrophe now. But there is a lot to lose, and in these past weeks America nearly lost it. Let's hope that as America steps back from the brink, Republicans remember that it's their job to protect the system, not to smash the system in hopes of building something better from the ruins.

"That's how student radicals think -- not conservatives."

Trouble is, all this financial stuff really means nothing to them, in spite of their rhetoric. They don't care, because they know something from history (the only thing they get right from history but that's a different topic) - an incumbent president is reelected if the economy is good.

Period.

They so hate Obama (in spite of the fact that he's practically one of them as far as both economics and the 4th, 5th, and 8th amendments go) that they're willing to give up the House to get rid of him.

Consider what happens if the economy so tanks that all 3 are swapped:
* Democratic House
* Republican Senate
* Republican President

what do you get under that combination: Republican Judges. Not "Conservative". Republican. Absolutely ready to rubber-stamp everything they want at a moments notice.

And given how powerless the Democrats are to get the current judicial slate through the appointment process (even while briefly having a super-majority), how much more useless will they be to stop a Republican majority?

So they're letting the tea party have their fun now, and will sacrifice them just as quickly as they embraced them to get their judges.

It really is the only explanation I can think of for the mainstream party to be letting their extremists get away with so much damage to their reputation.
