Usually, whether I agree or disagree with the sentiments expressed by one of your QOTDs, I have no trouble understanding what the author means... but I just can't parse this one into a consistent meaning.

The construction clearly implies that defining prayer is hard... and then compares it to something that's trivially easy...

Either is trivially easy only if you paint with a really broad brush. Think of all the different communities and cultures that live on Earth -- can you come up with an easy answer for who we all are that doesn't boil down to the uninformative, "uh ... people"?
