"It is particularly sobering to contemplate such [climatalogical modeling] outcomes in light of the evidence that smaller, natural climate swings since the end of the last ice age debilitated and in some cases destroyed entire civilizations in such places as Mesopotamia, Central and South America, and the southwestern region of what is today the United States." -- Kerry Emanuel, "Phaeton's Reins", Boston Review, January/February 2007

The current denialist thinking now tends toward "Well, this is just a natural warmup, and since we didn't cause the warming, we can't stop it either." This frees them from any liability for causing it, plus it's not their fault if we can't stop it (or mitigate it). The overriding concern is that we not bankrupt ourselves (aka, rich people) trying to fix an unfixable problem, as if the last human on Earth is going to say "We're all dead, but at least nobody went broke!"

There should be a mandatory class in all schools on Extinction Events, and why we don't want to experience one. (Caveat: Yes, I know we're in the middle of one, but we weren't particularly threatened before now.)
