"I believe all Southern liberals come from the same starting point -- race. Once you figure out they are lying to you about race, you start to question everything." -- Molly Ivins (via Jone Johnson Lewis' collection of quotations on about.com)

Is she saying all Southern liberals are lying about race?

As opposed to Northern liberals? Southern conservatives?

Is she excluding people of color from "Southern liberals"?

I know you may not know the answers, [personal profile] eftychia. :-)

I took it to mean that Southerners who figure out that everyone around them is lying about race, become liberals as a result.

Oh! That's a more positive interpretation, and much more like what I think of as Ivins' general writing. Thanks!

I've also bumped another, related, Ivins quote to be next in the queue, in case you weren't the only one who found this one unclear at first. So, thanks for pointing out the ambiguity instead of scratching your head in silence!
