[Regarding hurricane Sandy ...]

"This is mother nature slapping us in the face for not talking about climate change in an election year." -- beholderseye @ DKos, 2012-10-27

"For those on the coast don't let the Category of the storm or whether it's 'just' a Nor'easter dictate your response. Your personal memories of previous storms are no use in this unique situation. This may be the first time in many people's lifetimes or in the short period of time you have lived in your current home that you have seen this type of system." -- Brad Panovich, 2012-10-24 (requires Javacsript to see entire text) [Thanks to @VAXHeadroom for retweeting it so I'd see it, and to @pvolpe for tweeting it earlier.]

This may be the first time in many lifetimes that we have seen this kind of system. But it's not likely to be the last time in our lifetimes.

Maybe I'm kind of dense, but how exactly is this storm system different (or worse than) the "Hallowe'en Gale" from several years ago (aka "The Perfect Storm")? Sure, it's huge, but it seems like it's much less powerful.
