From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2012-10-30:
"The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life -- the sick, the needy and the handicapped." -- Hubert Horatio Humphrey, U.S. Vice President (1911-1978).

[We Americans now return our clocks to what is curiously still called "standard" time despite our using it for less than half the year.]

Also -- not *entirely* OT -- this:
Turns out there is an official roundup site offering information on how to help with the aftermath of Sandy: www.Serve.gov/Sandy
It includes:
• Links to organizations seeking volunteers -- and likely to need them for some time -- including local groups from New Jersey to Massachusetts.
• Info on how and where to donate.
• The Red Cross blood-center-finder phone number.
• Lots of good advice, such as: "Affiliate with existing non-profit organizations before coming to the disaster area. Immediately following a.disaster, a community can become easily overwhelmed by the amount of generous people who want to help. Contacting and affiliating with an established organization will help to ensure that you are appropriately trained to respond in the most effective way."
Thanks to Snopes.com for finding well-hidden mention of this well-hidden public information site ... in the "Rumor Control" section of FEMA's Hurricane Sandy page. Yes, really. No, not one of the first 100 places I looked, either.
