Do you remember the movie "After Midnight?" Where Dexter Gordon's character says something about how sometimes, at the end of the set he'll see his fingers are bleeding and he doesnt remember hurting htme... and his new friend says "is that true?" and Gordon says "naw, but it gets them in the heart every time"
I don't remember that, but I do remember watching a college roommate play until his fingers bled without noticing, then shrug and continue after it was pointed out to him. (He was playing my guitar at the time. Fortunately the finish on it, when still pretty new, let me easily wipe the flecks of blood off when he finished.)
