I learned a lot of it in conversations with collectors, recreational shooters, and ex-military (which makes it sound as though I talked to more people than I did ... there's a lot of overlap -- also, you already know most of the people I've talked to in person about this stuff, I think). Some of it I picked up from FAQs on shooting club web sites or 2A-absolutist discussion boards (follow a "can you believe this nut said this?" link, find a mix of sane and nutty in the discussion thread, stumble across a link to a history of the 1934 National Firearms Act and the 1968 Gun Control Act, wind up learning something useful). And some I learned on Wikipedia while I was checking that my memory of something else was correct or looking up an interesting historical weapon somebody had just told me about.
I'll try to track down some useful web sites and a list of relevant Wikipedia pages later.
Things I write don't get called 'concise' very often. Cool!
And speaking of stumbled-upon info in Wikipedia, I just now found out about a rifle that held eighty rounds of ammo (talk about a large-capacity magazine!) from 1878! Apparently it never caught on.

Can you suggest any sources for when I need to go more deeply into the terminology?
