The only quibble I would have with your explanation is over the use of the term "assault weapon". As you point out, there are some localities that have actual legal definitions of such; but there is no one, overarching standard definition, and the several differing actual legal definitions often overlap AND/OR conflict. Wrap your brain around that, if you can.
Thus, whenever I find the use of the term "assault weapon" in conversation, I find that I must stop the person int he middle and actually ask, "What do YOU mean by that term?"
Basically, I find the use of the term so vague as to to be utterly useless in any gun ownership/gun banning argument.
Weeks ago I was contemplating starting an entry with, "Glenn's idea for an Assault Weapons Ban: everyone is banned from using the phrase 'assault weapon' unless they can define what it means and explain why their definition is meaningful." Maybe I should still try to write that entry, but I doubt I can do anywhere near as good a job as the post I pulled oday's quote-of-the-day from.
