I have this inexplicable desire to be Creating Something Clever with Microsoft Excel right now, only I have no idea what I want to create. It's not that I have a task in front of me that needs a spreadsheet to make it easier right this moment (well, none that I haven't already built the spreadsheets for), nor that I've just had some inspiration. It's a powerful ... craving, I guess. Rather like a craving for a specific food, but it's an urge to do something artistic in a particular medium (and this is an artistic urge more than a geekly one) instead of an urge to find and devour a particular substance.
It's confusing. An urge to draw without a specific inspiration for what to draw is bad enough, but I can at least start by picking up a pencil and doodling what I see around me. An urge to write can be satisfied by sitting down with a notebook or a computer and giving in to it, and an urge to compose may or may not be satisfied after picking up a guitar but at least it's clear where to start. With this I don't know where to begin. How do you "doodle" or "noodle" in Excel while waiting for an idea of what to create?
Interestingly, I think I could satisfy the urge with SQL instead of a spreadsheet. But that has the same problem.
My muse is a damned tease.
