On the subject of modeling the real world for virtual environments: "But the real messiness starts with liquids, gases, and plasmas. What happens when your avatar puts sugar in a bowl of water or dips an apple into honey? Even if we program the honey to get stuck on the apple and slowly drip off the apple, Richard notes that this will surely lead to a player wondering (at some juncture) why honey drips off kittens at the same rate it drips off apples." -- Greg Lastowka, 2004-01-22, referring to Designing Virtual Worlds by Richard Bartle.

For all the Maryland/DC/Virginia folks reading this (and anyone else who'll be passing through at the right times): The Homespun Ceilidh Band is performing at the Washington Folk Festival this weekend, the Potomac Celtic Festival next weekend, and as part of the Fete de la Musique DC the weekend after that.

The Washington Folk Festival is Saturday, 2004-06-05 and Sunday, 2004-06-06 at Glen Echo Park in Glen Echo, Maryland (near Chevy Chase). We're playing tomorrow, 2004-06-05, 16:15-17:00, on the Cuddle-Up Stage. If you haven't been to this festival before, it's a pretty wide-ranging sampling of ethnicities and genres with performances on seven stages throughout the day. In addition to performances, they usually have dance classes teaching various ethnic styles. (Oooh, Fynesound will be there as well, and they'll finish up early enough for me to get over to our stage. Groovy!)

The Potomac Celtic Festival is Saturday, 2004-06-12 and Sunday, 2004-06-13, at Morven Park's International Equestrian Center in Leesburg, Virginia. We are performing both days:

  • Saturday, 2004-06-12, 13:00-13:45 on the Grove Stage
  • Saturday, 2004-06-12, 18:30-19:00 on the Barnaby Stage
  • Sunday, 2004-06-13, 13:30-14:15 on the Grove Stage
  • Sunday, 2004-06-13, 15:45-16:30 on the Barnaby Stage
Note the different times on the different days. Also note that for all I know they might revise the schedule again between now and then, so check their web site late next week. Finally, note that local favourites Elke Baker, Maggie Sansone, Mac-Talla, the Potomac Valley Scottish Fiddle Club, Tinsmith, and a whole bunch of other acts will be there, so plan to make a long day of being entertained by folks you may know, in addition to the headliners from far-flung places. Just don't forget to make your way over to the Grove and Barnaby stages at the right times to catch us. ([livejournal.com profile] puzzledance, will you be performing there this year?)

N.b.: Yes, this means that I am busy both days of Conterpoint. I plan to be at the convention in the evenings, however. And I expect to be very, very tired.

The Fete de la Musique DC runs from 2004-06-18 through 2004-06-21 at venues scattered around Washington, DC (at any given hour there'll be several performances going on at different sites -- the schedule is a 32 page PDF). We're performing on Saturday, 2004-06-19 from 16:00 to 18:00 at Finn MacCool's, 713 8th St., SE.

Other LJ folks who'll be [ performing / working / doing living-history demos / vending / whatever ] at PCF and WFF, post a comment here, eh?

Perrine is home. All went well. I'm not supposed to chase her around the house or let her chase me for several days, but when I brought her home she ate only a few bites of food before going into mouse-hunting mode. More later.
