"This 'zeal for secrecy' I am talking about -- and I have barely touched the surface -- adds up to a victory for the terrorists. When they plunged those hijacked planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon three years ago this morning, they were out to hijack our Gross National Psychology. If they could fill our psyche with fear -- as if the imagination of each one of us were Afghanistan and they were the Taliban -- they could deprive us of the trust and confidence required for a free society to work. They could prevent us from ever again believing in a safe, decent or just world and from working to bring it about. By pillaging and plundering our peace of mind they could panic us into abandoning those unique freedoms -- freedom of speech, freedom of the press -- that constitute the ability of democracy to self-correct and turn the ship of state before it hits the iceberg." -- Bill Moyers, addressing the Society of Professional Journalists, 2004-09-11

The speech contains several other important points and supporting information about the state of journalism and its effects on our society. [livejournal.com profile] twistedchick quoted most of it, and the full text is available at TomPaine.com

From [livejournal.com profile] acroyear70 who got it from John Cleese:

How many Bush administration officials does it take to change a light bulb?

None. There's nothing wrong with that light bulb. There is no need to change anything. We made the right decision and nothing has happened to change our minds. People who criticize this light bulb now, just because it doesn't work anymore, supported us when we first screwed it in, and when these flip-floppers insist on saying that it is burned out, they are merely giving aid and encouragement to the Forces of Darkness.

As requested by [livejournal.com profile] silmaril and honoured by [livejournal.com profile] juuro and [livejournal.com profile] thette that I've noticed so far ... ("When you see this, post a bit of poetry."):

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
    Someone had blunder'd.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death,
    Rode the six hundred.

Feeling restless but too frazzled to do much else, so here's a meme, picked up from [livejournal.com profile] doomspark

This appears to be the latest variant on the 'I Never' or 'Pity' meme )
