From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2013-04-04:

"Boredom is the brain's way to tell you you should be doing something else. But the brain doesn't always know the most appropriate thing to do. If you're bored and use that energy to play guitar and cook, it will make you happy. But if you watch TV, it may make you happy in the short term, but not in the long term." -- Gary Marcus, psychology professor.

Mrmn. The last time I was bored and watched TV, I learned how to make a dish which I subsequently made, which was fun to do, and which delighted those who ate it. The last time I watched TV I wasn't bored, I was hanging out socially with my roommate: we discussed what we were seeing, she taught me quite a few things about the subject, and we had a great time together. I get a little tired sometimes of the blanket condemnation of TV as all worthless. It's a medium, like any other, with quality examples and lots of crap, and subject to the same moral panics as any other.
