"It's one of the great blessings of my very unorthodox childhood that I wasn't ever asked to define myself as any one thing at any point. I was just allowed to be me, growing and changing at every moment." -- iO Tillett Wright, in a December 2012 TEDxWomen talk that is interesting for much more than this quote. (~ 18 minutes)

Am I the only person made uncomfortable by that video's scrupulous avoidance of the word "bisexual"?

I hate that word and I'm glad she acknowledges my existence without using it. Practically its only use is to define what I am being discriminated against for.

My instinctive reaction: it's not well-defined: if we map gayness to the interval [0, 1] (which is absurd to begin with), which subset is "bisexual"? (0, 1)? [0.5, 0.5]? If I'm 0.5 by number of partners but 0.0 by time in LTRs, do I get to pick?

Response I expect if I voice that reaction: smug anti-nerd nerds (I'm looking at you, lj user=xkcd) talking about how not everything is mathematically precise, man, take off your fedora and be a human being.

...so the human question is: "is this person possibly interested in me/my partner/this other person?" and the answer is "try asking/try asking/none of your damn business", no matter what my identity is. And the other, uglier human question is "ew, you're icky!", to which my answer is "that's not a question, go fuck yourself".

Hope this helps.

(and, of course, part of "go fuck yourself" is to say "yes, I am this category you say is icky and/or doesn't exist. Look at me. Look at me!" But that doesn't mean I think the category is any good.)

Good answer, really is! Smugness really needs to shrivel up and die already.
