(Two quotes today since there are at least three themes I wanted to hit.)

"I often say that teachers are a combination of Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Einstein, Gandhi, and Tony Soprano, all rolled in together, because that's all the skill set you need as a schoolteacher." -- Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, interviewed on the PBS television program, In The Life, episode, "Lifesavers" (aired, at least in my area, in the wee hours of 2008-11-10).

In the same segment, she also said something that I myself have said in nearly the same words: "I would love to go back at some point, but teaching five periods a day was the most exhausting job I ever had. It just drains all of your energy out of you, when you're doing it at the level that most teachers do it at. But it is the best, most fulfulling life's work that anybody could do; make a difference in the life of a child."

"When you do something noble and beautiful and nobody noticed, do not be sad. For the sun every morning is a beautiful spectacle and yet most of the audience still sleeps." -- John Lennon (b. 1940-10-09, d. 1980-12-08)
