From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2016-05-06:

"The software is functioning as intended," said Amber.

"Wait," I asked, "so it's supposed to delete my personal files from my internal hard drive without asking my permission?"

"Yes," she replied.

-- James Pinkstone, recounting a conversation with an Apple rep after Apple Music deleted 122 GB of music files from his laptop.

From [info] realinterrobang's quote post a couple days ago:

[T]hrough the Apple Music subscription, which I had, Apple now deletes files from its users' computers. When I signed up for Apple Music, iTunes evaluated my massive collection of Mp3s and WAV files, scanned Apple's database for what it considered matches, then removed the original files from my internal hard drive. REMOVED them. Deleted. If Apple Music saw a file it didn't recognize -- which came up often, since I'm a freelance composer and have many music files that I created myself -- it would then download it to Apple's database, delete it from my hard drive, and serve it back to me when I wanted to listen, just like it would with my other music files it had deleted." -- James Pinkstone, "Apple Stole My Music. No, Seriously.", Vellum Atlanta

Holy shit. It's enough to make a person think about becoming a Luddite.

Except it isn't the normal behavior and Amber makes me want to seriously rant at her some. But if you read through the comments the author, as of the last time I read the piece a few days ago, admitted to certain commenters that he has come to realize the experience he had is indeed not normal, and other commenters jumped in to say that some of this depends on which Apple service you've subscribed to.

I don't use Apple products and once I realized the article was not as much the death knell as it at first sounded I lost interest in the entire topic so I'm not going look at it again, but if you check through the comments you should see where the author was basically like, yeah, OK, think I overstated the case against Apple after all.

Which, you know, chaps my ass, but doesn't hold my interest too much.
