I have a lot of thoughts on this one.

On teaching children, there were two things I taught very well -- to observe and to question. One that I hadn't taught well was how to experience joy; Gabe picked that up well enough on his own, some of the others, not so much. More on 'joy' later. 'Should' can be a very ambiguous word.

As to prioritizing mending ourselves before mending the world -- I am certainly the part of the world closest to me, and so it makes sense for me to have more responsibility for the parts of the world within my skin first. But it is important to distinguish between importance *to me* and importance *to the world*.

Deciding which is important happens inside my skull, which is as close to me as it's possible to get, and thus is something for which my own responsibility becomes inescapable. At the same time, the parallax issue becomes intractable. There are practical solutions to this conundrum, but if you have a systemic solution please enlighten me.

best,

Joel. Despite whose sense of humor, found no way to integrate either beards or breasts into the discussion.
