Let's see...he is the son and grandson of Admirals (full, four-striper types) who partied his way through Annapolis from which he graduated at very nearly the bottom of his class. He then managed to ride paternal coattails through multiple wrecks in flight school and flight duty. Any normal squid would have had his wings revoked long before getting to crash the third, let alone the fifth airplane. Then, desperate for credibility, he manages to get himself on a geniunely dangerous bombing mission that gets him shot down. His military career was notable for its lack of distinction. He did not display the temperament one expects of those marked for a career culminating in flag rank.

He is impulsive. He likes to gamble on the big win. He likes to showboat. Yeah...
