Since prejudices are so often projections, I do wonder if some modest element of transphobia isn't that the irreducible integrity of trans people being openly themselves in a world lethally hostile to their existence shames those who have compromised their own integrity over much lower stakes, telling themselves they "had no choice". I suspect some or even many transphobes accuse trans people of deception because they are, themselves, deceivers and ashamed of it, and want to bring these chastening exemplars of integrity down to their level so they can stop feeling so inferior about their own lack of integrity.
