Two of my IRC communities (#filkhaven and #yuletide) moved to Discord because it has an excellent mobile app. In the case of Yuletide, there are also separate discussion channels that work very well.

the irc channel created by Laurie&Derek when they lived in Australia is still alive. there's about 6 of us who talk on there, tho lots more are logged in.

Only reason I had AIM was due to a telephone job requiring it for out of band communications. I wonder what they're using now.

Google Hangouts is still alive, and you can even use an XMPP client to connect to it.
What's not still present is the ability to interconnect other XMPP servers with Google's XMPP network. This interop never got a lot of usage.
