If someone's arguments are limited to ad-hominem attacks, they will find something to attack. Hence the "don't argue with a pig" aphorism.
This is made more frustrating when one's opponent's characteristics *do* have a direct bearing on the discussion, example Trump's incomprehension of the concept of "truth". Not *all* ad hominem attacks are wrong.
