A Facebook post by Chris Brecheen, 2018-08-15:

I used to be utterly unable to Grok when my history teachers told me that Hitler's strategy was "Don't tell a little lie. Tell a big lie and repeat it over and over again." I honestly thought they must have gotten something wrong or there was SOME truth to it or that there was some form of mind control involved or something. Like I literally thought Mr. Ballard (and that guy at College of the Canyons) had fucked up a translation or something. It COULDN'T be that simple. It just COULD NOT.

I could NOT get my head around how a lie, proven false, could still be "in play," once it was shown to be untrue. (Many years later, I realize that this is why Nazi ideology obliterated the German intelligentsia--they couldn't get their heads around it either. They kept thinking truth would win. They thought proof would matter. What they needed to be doing was punching Nazis.)

I thought 1984 was really overwrought. Kind of histrionic melodrama, TBH.

Watching Giuliani and Trump tell people that facts change (facts mind you) and not to trust what you see but believe them....and then watching about 24% of the country do exactly THAT and live in an entirely different reality with an entirely different set of "facts," I get it now.

And it is the most terrifying thing I've ever seen.

The "quarter of the population" aspect of things seems to hold from one nation to the next, too...

Meanwhile, what I could never believe is that the world could accidentally sleepwalk into WWI, and yet....

Dude doesn't seem to have noticed the irony that he's describing how his choice to engage in wishful thinking and ignore what better informed people were presenting him evidence of resulted in him not appreciating what they were telling him about the phenomenon of people choosing to engage in wishful thinking and ignoring what better informed people present them evidence of.

True. But the oversight doesn't surprise me, alas. And I've seen people realize, "Oh, Ishould have taken ____ seriously when folks tried to warn me," then six months or a year later go back to, "But oh, it can't possibly be as bad as people are trying to tell me, that doesn't happen in real life," on some related topic.

:(

Would that all of this were only a film and that we could all see the closing credits, stand from our seats and walk away, shaking our heads at the inanity.
