"Due to her history of high blood pressure, Pichardo was taken to a medical unit to be examined as a precaution. A nurse noted she had been taking hormone pills and asked her whether she was a man. Despite Pichardo's denial of this, the nurse added this note to her file: 'Transgender, male parts, female tendencies.'
"The nurse told the doctor, who reclassified Pichardo as male without an examination, according to a newly-released appeals court opinion."

[Note that this case will get a more visceral reaction from more people on account of the victim being cis, but it really wouldn't be any better if she had been trans. This case does demonstrate how attitues that don't consider trans identities real hurt anyone whose identity is suspected for whatever reason, trans or cis.]

I don't want to say "I oppose bathroom laws because I might be a false positive" because that's not even in the top several reasons to oppose that malarkey -- I oppose legislated bigotry in general and laws afflicting trans people in specific. But there's this too -- I have wide shoulders and a square build. So many are so sure they know at a glance but they don't and can't and it's a stupid inquiry anyway. I really hope our society can continue learning that people are who they are..
