SONNET: ON A WALL

(2018-12-27, Facebook) by S.P. Somtow

O Wall! My Wall, my Beautiful, Big Wall
In height, ten concrete cubits, plus a door!
Surely you'll halt the grim advance of all
Those dark-skinned scum that yearn to not be poor!

O Wall! You're not as tall as I first thought,
For I can see the tops of cowboy hats.
With tariffs, concrete is too dearly bought;
We can cut taxes if we just use slats.

But then, too, slats get pricey by the mile,
We'll stretch our dollars more, and our intents
Shall still be pure, with plausible denial,
When concrete thins to slats, which shrink to fence.

Believe my massive brain! one thing is certain --
No rapist crook will pierce my beaded curtain.

[Happy fifth day of Christmas, to folks celebrating!]
