A thought from a cis person who doesn't seem to have a very strong sense of gender: "Hormonal [and] genital" would be a big shock, but most humans have lived with now having a "different hormonal situation than you're used to" at least once, though neither puberty nor menopause is "suddenly one morning."
In that magic wand transformation hypothesis, it would I think make a big difference to be warned, even if the warning was something like "alien wizards are doing this to some people, we don't know why"--anything that would make me less likely to start with "this must be a dream/am I hallucinating?"
