"'Alexandria presents a challenge, because conservative men or men in general who are encouraged to objectify women are attracted to her, but she's also 'unmanageable' in that she doesn't exist for them,' Heldman said. 'She is a woman who not only has now formal power, but a lot of informal power, in that she doesn't give a damn what they think of her. I think it's a disconcerting place for men who may be used to attractive women seeking their validation.'
"That kind of inability to deal with a woman like Ocasio-Cortez is, in many ways, emblematic of the broader crisis facing the Republican Party, which is moving backward in terms of gender diversity in Congress even as Democrats add more women and people of color to their ranks each year [...]"

Proof of my obsolescence
Re: Proof of my obsolescence
For me, Virginia, unless the conversation already has me thinking about the ancient world.
Problem of quoting from the middle of the article after they've started shortening her name, combined with this odd thing where male politicians' names usually get shortened to their surnames but female politicians' names oget shortened to their given names seems-like-half of the time. (Hmm. I should
start countinguh, see of anybody else has counted, or if I can talk someone into counting, how often that actually happens, and whether it happens more at different levels of politics.)At least on Twitter it's easier, because there she's AOC.
Re: Proof of my obsolescence
The quote you pulled is, itself, a quote from a psychologist named Heldman (name appears in middle of quote), but was not written by the author of the article.
But we can go and examine it in its context to see what is going on...
Re: Proof of my obsolescence
The solution is the bracket:
"'Alexandria [Ocasio-Cortez] presents a challenge, because conservative men or men in general who are encouraged to objectify women are attracted to her, but she's also 'unmanageable' in that she doesn't exist for them,' Heldman said."
Or even:
"'Alexandria [Ocasio-Cortez, Representative D-NY] presents a challenge, because conservative men or men in general who are encouraged to objectify women are attracted to her, but she's also 'unmanageable' in that she doesn't exist for them,' Heldman said."
