This was brought home to me on Monday.

As you know, I'm as tall as the average man, and my hair is only just beginning to grow back after chemotherapy, so I look like I have a crew cut. My left breast is gone, and while eventually I plan to wear a bra with a prosthesis in it so as not to make other people uncomfortable, right now I'm still breastless on that side.

I was at the doctor's for yet another medical procedure and was just about to open the door to the ladies' room when a nearby man said, "That's the LADIES' room!" I said, "I'm a woman," and went on in.

That's kind of you, but I don't think the guy was trying to be mean; I think he was trying to save me from an embarrassing mistake, kind of in a "Psst! Buddy, that's the ladies' room" kind of way.

Or maybe I'm just an optimist. :-)
